![]() ![]() In some cases (like in the extremities their surcharges reach when booking an award ticket from US to Europe) it can be very profitable (OK, not so much if compared to flying LOT out of the US), in most cases these miles simply subtract their own acquisition cost from the ticket (and in some cases even less than than). Of course Lufthansa's "offer" to waive fuel surcharges (or some/most of them at least) by asking for more miles is another thing they offer exclusively to their own miles and more members. ![]() Now here's what I find interesting: The quoted sum of added costs (143,60€) is the exact amount of all these surcharges minus that last YR of 17,50€! So either Lufthansa doesn't actually charge that last YR or Aegean gets charged, but doesn't pass it on (and being that it's in the ita-matrix I'd assume the latter to be the case)! Here's what the breakdown of the added costs for the aforementioned flight in January are according to the ita-matrix. with "guides" on how to avoid such surcharges, which are of course useless if one is bound to a specific ffp which passes them on, unless you can depart from a country that per law forbids such surcharges, of which there are basically 2 or 3). Few ffp's don't pass them on, most do (and dozens of websites have posted articles, YouTubers have posted videos etc. VIE-BKK-TPE-SFO (J) BR - 240.00€ (YQ) + 60.99€ (Taxes etc.) online (flight in summer 2020)īe very careful when using Lufthansa's award tickets with their own frequent flyer program as a comparison (or any awards in an airline's own ffp as opposed to issuing Awards with partner airlines within an alliance using the same ffp)!įirst of all "carrier-imposed surcharges", such as fuel surcharges, are, of course, imposed by the operating airline to the issuing airline, which then chooses whether or not to pass these charges on to the customer (passenger).
